If you are new to the digital world, it may be difficult for you to understand certain computer terminologies. In this article, we will look at the concept of different computing terms for beginners.

  1. Application is a computer program that performs specific tasks such as word processing.
  2. Bug or insect refers to an error, glitch, or failure in any computer program or hardware system.
  3. Folder is a system that helps organize files, programs and projects on the computer. It’s similar to organizing files on a shelf in your cabinet.

  5. Computer is a collection of physical components that allow software programs to run.
  6. Crash is a serious computer failure; the computer itself crashes or a program unexpectedly aborts. A crash means a very serious hardware or software malfunction.
  7. Download a file, program, or document that is transferred from one computer to another.
  8. Hard drive is the device where information is stored. Hard drive space is the amount of permanent data storage measured in bytes.
  9. Hardware is the physical components of a computer; monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, computer unit, scanner, etc.
  10. Icon is a small clickable image that opens programs on a computer.
  11. The Internet is a global network that helps connect millions of users around the world to share and exchange data, information, opinions, etc.
  12. Modem is something that is connected to a computer to connect to the Internet or other networks. It is usually a small box that you get from your provider.
  13. Monitor is similar to a television screen, the monitor allows you to see the data on your computer.
  14. Web browser is software that you use to access the Internet or World Wide Web such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox.
  15. Peripherals are the input and/or output devices that are connected to the computer. Keyboard, mouse and printer are computer peripherals.
  16. Port is the connection slot on the computer that allows input devices such as monitors, disk drives, mice, or keyboards.
  17. Mouse is a portable device that helps you control the pointer on the desktop/screen.
  18. Computer network is a physical or logical construction that connects different computers and helps them communicate.
  19. Reboot is used to refer to a reboot when the operating system closes all programs and completes all pending input and output operations before starting a soft reset.
  20. Software are the programs (applications) that allow the computer to operate or do certain tasks.
  21. Keyboard is the device used to write words, numbers and to perform tasks. You can also use shortcuts using the keyboard to perform tasks faster.
  22. CPU or Central Processing Unit is the brain of the computer.

  24. Computer virus is a program designed to harm the computer. They are basically the same as human viruses.
  25. Resolution is the degree of sharpness, clarity, or what you see on a computer screen.
