Examples of Chemical Compounds

We explain the examples of chemical compounds. The chemicals are substances that are formed when two or more chemical elements react and combine to become a new. Compounds have been on planet Earth since the era of its formation; conditions of extreme heat and pressure of approximately 4.7 billion years ago, have caused different atoms to unite and have created them in great quantity, turning them into components of the earth’s crust, such as silicates.

If the atom is the unit that forms the elements, the molecule is the unit that gives structure to the compounds. Each molecule is the union of the elements that participate in the compound. For example, in the compound water, with the molecule represented by H 2 O, the elements are hydrogen H and oxygen. There are two hydrogen atoms (H 2 ) and one oxygen (O) there.
Chemical compounds are pure substances since they have their own unique characteristics, and at first glance they only show one phase, that is, they are homogeneous. These properties differentiate them from other pure substances such as elements and other compounds. Some of the most important compounds are water H 2 O, sodium chloride NaCl, and calcium carbonate CaCO 3 .

Formulas of chemical compounds

To express chemical compounds, formulas are written , which describe how many atoms there are of each element in the molecule . The formulas carry the symbols of the elements followed by the number of their participating atoms, as a subscript . It is explained with examples:

  • Water (H 2 O): 2 hydrogen atoms H and 1 oxygen O.
  • Sodium chloride (NaCl): 1 atom of sodium Na and 1 atom of chlorine Cl.
  • Sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ): 2 hydrogen atoms H, 1 sulfur S and 4 oxygen O.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ): 1 atom of carbon C and 2 of oxygen O.
  • Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ): 1 atom of calcium Ca, 1 of carbon C and 3 of oxygen O.
  • Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S): 2 hydrogen atoms H and 1 sulfur atom S.
  • Methane (CH 4 ): 1 carbon atom C and 4 hydrogen atoms H.
  • Ethane (C 2 H 6 ): 2 carbon atoms C and 6 hydrogen atoms H.
  • Stearic acid [CH 3 (CH 2 ) 16 COOH]: 18 carbon atoms C, 2 oxygen atoms O and 36 hydrogen atoms H.
  • Ethyl ether [CH 3 CH 2 OCH 2 CH 3 ]: 4 carbon atoms C, 10 hydrogen atoms H, 1 oxygen atom O.

Compounds are classified into several types based on two main criteria: the atoms that make them up and the bond that binds their atoms.examples of chemical compounds

Types of compounds according to their atoms

According to the elements that participate with their atoms in the molecule, there will be different types of compounds:

  • Inorganic compounds , which carry metal and non-metal atoms, joined together to create different substances. Among them are: hydracids , oxyacids , binary salts , oxysalts , oxides , hydroxides , hydrides .
  • The organic compounds which have strings of covalent bonds between carbon atoms C, completed with hydrogen atoms H and other elements such as oxygen O, nitrogen N, sulfur S and phosphorus P. These include: alkanes , alkenes , alkynes , alcohols , aldehydes , ketones, thiols, ethers , esters, carboxylic acids, acid anhydrides, amines , amides, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates , lipids , vitamins, enzymes.

Types of compounds according to their bonds

There are two types of compounds according to the bonds that participate in their molecules:

  • Ionic compounds
  • Covalent compounds

The ionic compounds carrying one or more links ionic among the atoms forming molecules. In ionic bonds, one of the atoms gives up its valence electrons for the other to receive them. This neutralizes the charges creating a neutral molecule.

The covalent compounds carrying one or more covalent bonds between atoms in their molecules. In covalent bonds, atoms share their electrons to complete their octet rule. They are more frequent among organic compounds .
