Examples of Salts

We explain that what are examples of Salts? In chemistry, salts are the chemical compounds that are formed by the ionic bond between a metal , which acts as a positive ion or cation, and an anion that can be a non-metal or a radical. They come from the reaction between an acid and a base, where the acid provides the anion, while the base provides the cation for the creation of the salt molecule, leaving water as a secondary product.

The salts are characterized by being ionic compounds. They are generally soluble in water , creating aqueous solutions . Inside this liquid they separate into their ions, giving the mixture the ability to conduct an electric current. They are found in nature in large quantities, as components of soil, seawater and minerals that are produced in underground deposits.

Types of salts

Salts are classified according to the atoms that make up their molecule in binary and oxysal salts.

  • The binary salts are those which are only formed by two elements, which are a metal and a nonmetal. They are more abundant in sea water. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl).
  • The oxysalts are those carrying the metal as cation and an anion consisting of a non – metal and one or more oxygen atoms. For example, sodium sulfate Na 2 SO 4 .
