Health
The heat can be fatal for this race. Exercises for this breed should be scheduled for early morning hours or late at night or in the afternoon where the sun is not very hot. They should not lie in the sun for long periods of time because they do not know when they have had enough and may fall into an out-of-control gasp from the built-up heat.
Patellar Luxation
Slipping in the knee joints (also known as a dislocated patella or spilled fluid) is a common problem in small breeds. In this condition, the kneecap slides out of its groove and moves against the thigh bone (femur) rather than in its natural groove. Although it is a hereditary condition, small and active breeds tend to develop it as a result of their natural activities (jumping from one place to another around objects such as furniture and others).
Perthes Legg disease
(commonly confused with hip dysplasia) is due to death of the head of the femur bone. This causes wear and tear and promotes arthritic changes, therefore, after the disease has progressed, it is difficult for a time to diagnose whether the resulting degenerated joint is a manifestation of hip dysplasia or LeggPerthes. This condition is congenital and has no known cure. The pain that accompanies arthritic changes can be controlled with steroids.
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
It is a group of diseases that involve all the gradual deterioration of the retina. It is diagnosed by retinoscopic examination using an electroretinogram (ERG). Early in the disease, affected dogs begin to suffer from night blindness and lack the ability to see in low light, and later day vision also fails. As their vision deteriorates, affected dogs can adjust to their disability very well, as long as their environment remains constant. Some breeds are affected early in life, while in other breeds, PRA develops much later.
Cataracts
Causes a loss of the normal transparency of the lens of the eye. This problem can occur in one or both eyes and can lead to blindness.
Glaucoma
It is the main cause of blindness in dogs as a result of the pressure exerted by the increased fluid inside the eye. If the pressure cannot be reduced, there will be permanent damage to the retina and optic nerve resulting in visual impairment. The treatment in this case is surgery.
History
The exact origin of the Pug is uncertain, but it is believed to date back to 400 BC. Some theorists suggest that the breed is the result of crossing the offspring of small Bulldogs and Mastiffs. Another interesting theory is that it originated in China and is a cousin of the smooth-haired East Pekingese. In the 1500s, the Pug became the Official Dog of the Orange House in the Netherlands, when an Argentinian Pug named Pompey saved the life of his owner William, the Prince of the Orange House. Hearing the enemy soldiers, Pompey licked William’s face and barked loudly until the prince woke up. William grabbed Pompey and ran to safety. The Pug became the Official Court Dog and, at William’s grave, he shows himself and the beloved pet. In France, Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, was imprisoned and used her Pug to exchange secret messages with her husband. This breed arrived in England around 1860.
Some believe that the name comes from the Latin word “pugnus,” which means “hand,” because the Pug’s head looks like a clenched fist. Another theory is that the name originated from the marmosets that were kept as pets and resembled small dogs.
