An Ethernet port is a small square slot found on the back of most computers, laptops, printers, routers, switches, Blu-ray players, DVD players, LCDs, LEDs, video game consoles, and other external devices. . An Ethernet port looks like a regular phone jack, but it is not compatible with phones since the slot is slightly wider and is used to connect a computer to the network or the Internet via cable using an RJ-45 connector. . The Ethernet port is also known as a network port, because it allows network/Internet connections.

Ethernet is also known as IEEE 802.3. and is the most common type of connection to a local area network (LAN). An Ethernet port can also be used to connect one computer to another computer or to computers on a local network. For example, in an office there may be six workers, each with their own computer, all of whom need access to the same databases, programs, and external devices such as printers and scanners. By connecting each device to a central server or hub with Ethernet technology, all devices will be able to access the same information and be able to communicate with other devices on the network.

The Ethernet port allows three types of connection:

  1. 10BASE-T running at 10 megabits per second (Mbit / s)
  2. 100BASE-TX running at 100 Mbit / s
  3. 1000BASE-T also called Fast Ethernet and runs at 1000 Mbit/s (1 gigabit per second)

The network connection will be as fast as the minimum speed used by the devices. So for example, if you connect a device that uses a 10BASE-T card to a 100BASE-T network, the device will only be able to send and receive data at 10 Mbps. If you have a Gigabit Ethernet router (1000 BASE-T) and you connect devices using 100BASE-T cables, the maximum data transfer rate will be 100 Mbps.

A physical disadvantage of an Ethernet port is its susceptibility to damage and difficulty in repair. It is important to be very careful when inserting or removing a cable from an Ethernet port, as the physical elements of the port can be damaged. Repairing an Ethernet port usually requires the device to be shipped back to the manufacturer or an electronics repair service, which can be expensive.

While Ethernet remains the standard for wired networks, it has been superseded in many areas by wireless networks. Wi-Fi allows you to connect a laptop or smartphone to the network without using a cable. The 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard even offers faster data transfer speeds than Gigabit Ethernet. However, wired network connections are still more reliable and faster than wireless connections.
